Where to Eat Halal in Tokyo

Tokyo's halal scene has come a long way from convenience store onigiri. The city now has dozens of certified halal restaurants, most of them focused on one thing: wagyu beef. Ramen, steak, gyukatsu, yakiniku, sukiyaki. If you eat beef, you'll eat very well here. If you don't, your options narrow fast.

The good stuff is concentrated in a handful of neighbourhoods, each with its own character and (crucially) its own prayer access. Here's where to go.

Shibuya

Shibuya is the halal wagyu capital of Tokyo. The GYUMON chain has multiple branches here, all certified halal, and the Prayer Room at Shibuya PARCO 5F West means you're never more than a few minutes from prayer.

The signature dish across all GYUMON spots is the White Broth A5 Wagyu Ramen (3,180 JPY). Eight hours of halal chicken bones go into that broth. It's rich, milky, and coats the tongue. The A5 wagyu on top melts. Counter seating, about a dozen seats, and it gets loud after Maghrib on weekends. Come at lunch for a quieter meal.

For yakiniku (Japanese BBQ where you grill your own meat), Gyumon's Shibuya 2nd branch is the pick. The A5 wagyu ribeye at 4,950 JPY is the star. Don't skip the marinated tongue.

For sukiyaki, HALRA Shibuya does A5 wagyu in a subtly sweet broth simmered with halal chicken and vegetables (4,800 JPY). Only eight counter seats, so it's intimate.

Asakusa

Asakusa is the second major hub, especially if you're exploring Senso-ji Temple. The Asakusa Mosque is nearby, making this a comfortable area to spend a full day eating and sightseeing.

For a proper steak, HACHISAN is the place. The A5 Wagyu steak at 8,000 JPY is cooked to a perfect medium-rare, the fat rendering into a rich, buttery sauce. Only ten counter seats. Book ahead.

Godaime 1962 does both ramen and a beef cutlet. The cutlet (2,980 JPY) is better than the ramen. DATTEBAYO is the more accessible ramen option at 1,500 JPY, with the same eight-hour halal chicken bone broth. Expect a queue on weekends.

Shinjuku

Shinjuku has solid options but mosque access is spottier. SHINJUKU-TEI does the same rich wagyu ramen as the Shibuya spots, and the Prayer Room at Shibuya PARCO is a 10-minute walk.

Genki Taisho does both ramen and yakiniku. The beef cutlet at 2,200 JPY is better than the ramen. This spot is further from a mosque (3.7km), so plan your prayers around it.

Edogawa

Edogawa is where you go when you're tired of wagyu. The neighbourhood leans South Asian and Middle Eastern, with the Tokyo Nishikasai Masjid as the anchor.

WATAN SHAWARMA BURGER does a shawarma plate (1,500 JPY) piled high with marinated chicken. The garlic sauce makes it. The lamb burger (1,200 JPY) is a solid alternative. Four minutes from the masjid, expect a queue after Jumu'ah.

KIKUCHI is a grocery store that also serves food. Their beef cutlet at 1,200 JPY is surprisingly good. Kochiyo Halal Multi Cuisine does a peppery chicken bone ramen that's different from the wagyu spots.

Minato

Minato is the upscale district. No convenient mosque (the Matsuya Ginza prayer room is a 12-minute walk), but it has some unique options.

YUSRA's Kitchen is a small Turkish spot where the Adana kebab (1,800 JPY) is smoky and perfectly spiced. Grill Hunter Shinbashi does a wagyu steak platter (3,500 JPY), a generous cut seared to medium-rare, certified halal.

Tokyo rewards planning. Confirm opening hours before you go (especially for smaller spots), and plan your prayer times around the neighbourhood you're eating in.
